A Seed Planted Through the Airwaves

​Each issue, I have the privilege of sharing a story from one of our Lifeword collaborators around the world. This month, Bro. Oscar Gaitán from Nicaragua shared a testimony that serves as a powerful reminder that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
 
He tells the story of a man who grew up deeply disillusioned with religion. From an early age, he observed what appeared to be favoritism, where influence and status seemed to matter more than genuine faith. Convinced that religion had no answers, he turned instead to communism and atheism.
 
As he pursued meaning and purpose, he immersed himself in the philosophies of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and other influential atheist thinkers. He rose through the ranks of the communist system, faithfully embracing its ideals and dedicating himself to its vision. Yet despite his success and commitment, an emptiness remained.
 
He searched for fulfillment through knowledge, political achievement, and devotion to the cause. He believed that if he studied more, worked harder, and climbed higher, he would finally find satisfaction. Instead, the emptiness only grew.
 
Then life took a devastating turn.
 
After years of marriage, illness struck. Surgery followed surgery, but his condition failed to improve. As difficult as the physical pain was, an even deeper wound pierced his heart. While preparing for yet another operation, his wife told him she could no longer endure the hardship and was leaving him.
 
Everything he had trusted had failed him.
 
Around that same time, a woman he had worked alongside for more than twenty years experienced a dramatic transformation after placing her faith in Christ. They had shared the same hardships, worked in the same environment, and held many of the same beliefs. Yet suddenly, something was different about her.
 
She radiated joy. She spoke about faith, hope, and the Word of God with conviction and peace. The change was impossible to ignore.
 
The man watched carefully. Finally, he asked her, “What’s happened to you? We’ve known each other for years. We’ve been through difficult times together. Now you’re constantly talking about faith, love, and the Bible. What’s going on?”
 
She explained that some pastors had been visiting her home and studying the Bible with her.
 
His response was immediate.
 
“What? The next time they come, let me know. I want to meet them.”
 
In 2011, when Bro. Oscar Gaitán traveled to Cuba, he was one of those pastors.
 
When they arrived for another Bible study, the man was waiting.
 
“With all due respect,” he said, “I need you to know that I am an atheist. I was raised studying Marxism-Leninism.”
 
The conversation that followed lasted for hours. Though skeptical, he listened. At the end of their time together, the pastors asked if they could pray for him.
 
“Pray for me?” he replied. “Why? I don’t need prayer. I didn’t ask for prayer.”
 
Eventually, he agreed.
 
What began as curiosity soon became a sincere search for truth. Six months later, he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.
 
He was baptized, began serving faithfully, and seven years ago was ordained as a pastor. Today, he serves as a missionary on the island of Cuba.
 
Years later, reflecting on his journey to faith, he shared a remarkable memory.
 
“In my search for happiness,” he said, “I would spend hours listening to the radio. One day I began searching for international stations with my Russian-made Syboney radio. I always kept the volume very low because it was risky. If someone discovered you were listening to stations outside those approved by the Party, you could get into trouble.
 
“Suddenly, I heard a voice talking about God in a clear and biblical way. I liked what I heard and kept listening again and again. I remember the program opening with a powerful announcement: ‘Welcome to your program, The Christian Contact, with Pastor Ricardo Robinson, featuring the incomparable voice of Brother Luis Ortega and the Lifeword ministry.’
 
“It wasn’t just any radio program. It was professionally designed to reach my heart.”
 
What he did not realize at the time was that God was already pursuing him. Long before he met Oscar. Long before he attended a Bible study. Long before he surrendered his life to Christ.
 
The seed of the gospel had already been planted.
 
Through a radio broadcast, God’s Word crossed borders, political systems, and personal barriers to reach a man who believed he had no need for God. Years later, that seed would bear fruit through the faithful witness of believers, biblical discipleship, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
 
Today, a former atheist and devoted communist is preaching the very gospel he once opposed.
 
Stories like this remind us that we rarely see the full impact of our obedience. A broadcast is aired. A Bible study is hosted. A conversation takes place. A prayer is offered. And God uses each act of faithfulness to accomplish His purposes in ways we may never fully understand this side of eternity.
 
The gospel continues to reach hearts, transform lives, and call people to Himself—and sometimes, it begins with a radio turned down low in a place where few would expect the message to be heard.
